The author of Hebrews is painting a second picture about hope for our encouragement – hope as an anchor for our soul. A ship that is not anchored securely at the port is in danger our winds and storms, and our life is alike – we need a firm and secure anchor that won’t break away and throw us into anxiety, disappointment and disbelief when the life gets rough.
The hope we have in God is a firm and secure anchor because it was attached to heaven by the finished work of Christ on the cross – it enters the inner sanctuary of our High Priest who as our forerunner leads us behind the curtain into the holy presence of God. So just as this anchor of our souls is firmly and securely held by God’s mercy, let us firmly take hold (Phil 3:12) of this hope with conviction.
